DISTRIBUTION:

Coastal areas; prefer thick belts of tea-tree scrub and casuarinas not far from water. Uncommon to rare on mainland south-eastern Australia, more plentiful in Tasmania and on offshore islands.

IDENTIFICATION.

LENGTH = 120 mm

MALE: Crown and back olive-brown finely barred with black; rump and upper tail-coverts crimson; tail brown to black with slight bars. Lores and around eyes black; underparts light grey with thin black bars; centre of belly and undertail-coverts black. Eye hazel with naked blue eye-ring; bill red; legs pink-brown.

FEMALE: Similar to male but no black in centre of belly.

IMMATURES: Duller than adults, with indistinct bars; bill black.

 

NESTING. 

Breeds September-January. Nest spherical with long entrance tunnel; measures 350-400 mm long, 150-170 mm high and 150-200 mm wide, made of green grass stems, lined with white feathers. Eggs: Five to eight; white; 18 X 12 mm.

There is only one form of Beautiful Firetail.
